Hotteok: Korea’s Beloved Sweet Pancake

What is Hotteok? Hotteok or Korean Sweet pancake is a well-known traditional snack on the streets in Korea. It is crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. The filling may be a mix of brown sugar or honey, nuts, red beans, or cinnamon. Some use cheese and fruits too, and some even add vanilla ice cream on top. The possibilities are endless! Because of this, moms can enjoy making small or large sizes and experiment with the hotteok fillings and toppings.

Ingredients

  • Ingredients:
  • * 180 ml warm water
  • * Olive Oil / Sunflower Oil
  • * CJ Beksul Pancake Mix – Includes a pancake powder mix dry yeast, and filling mix
  • Optional:
  • * Vanilla Ice Cream
  • * Chocolate Chips / Chocolate Syrup
  • * Fruit Jam

Instructions

  • Instructions:
  • In a bowl, put in the pancake mix and the dry yeast.
  • In a separate bowl, pour in the contents of the filling/ jam mix. Set aside.
  • Add warm water to the pancake mixture. If you think it's too dry, you can add a little bit of water. Knead for 5 minutes.
  • After kneading, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and set it aside for 5 minutes.
  • Preheat the frying pan at a low temperature.
  • Once your dough rises after 5 minutes, your mixture is ready.
  • Add oil to the pan. The mixture would also be sticky, so rub oil to your palms as well.
  • You would also need a presser. You can use a bowl or a spatula. Don't forget to oil the bottom of the bowl too.
  • Divide the dough into mini balls. A golf ball size would be perfect. Flatten the dough balls.
  • Next, take a spoonful of the filling mix and put it on top of the flattened dough.
  • Fold the sides of the dough together to form a ball.
  • Put the dough onto the pan. Make sure to cook it on low heat.
  • After a few seconds, flip it once. This allows you to flatten the dough on the surface without the dough sticking too much onto your presser.
  • Get the bowl or presser and press onto the dough slowly until it flattens. Be careful not to make it too thin, or the filling will spill out, also not too thick, or the insides will be undercooked.
  • Check the underside to see if it is brown.
  • Flip the pancake to cook the other side.
  • Take the pancake out of the pan once cooked. Serve on a plate! Optional: Add vanilla ice cream or chocolate syrup on top.
